Under the integration of the Japanese public-private fund "Industrial Innovation Organization (INCJ)", Sony, Panasonic, and Japan Display Inc (JDI) announced on July 31 that they will establish a new company "JOLED" engaged in OLED panel research and development in January 2015. Although the three companies, including Sony, did not elaborate much on JOLED's future production plans, according to Nikkei, JOLED will trial-produce medium-sized OLED panels in 2015 and officially start mass production in 2018, aiming to improve research and development and production efficiency by concentrating production on medium-sized products.

Nikkei News reported on the 6th that JOLED will invest 20 billion yen in 2015 to build a trial production line for OLED panels, with trial production in the second half of 2015 and sample shipments in 2016. According to reports, the planned trial production targets medium-sized OLED panel products for tablets, such as 10-12 inches, and 13.3 inches for laptops, with a monthly production capacity of about 4,000 pieces, and plans to officially start mass production in 2018, aiming to supply Apple and other tablet/laptop manufacturers.

Reports indicate that OLED panels do not require a backlight unlike LCD panels, so if tablets/laptops use OLED panels, it can reduce weight by several hundred grams. However, due to the difficulty of Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics in mass-producing medium-sized OLED panels at low costs with their current production methods, JOLED, which adopts "printing" mass production technology, is expected to achieve a high market share in the medium-sized OLED panel market.

According to the American DisplaySearch, the global shipment value of OLED panels is estimated to reach 12.67 billion USD in 2014, and with the expanding demand for tablets/laptops, it is estimated that by 2020, the shipment value will double compared to 2014.
