The Optoelectronics Industry Development Association pointed out that head-up displays (HUD) and electronic rearview mirrors (E-mirror) are among the areas. With the widespread installation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), all detection and communication information display in ADAS must rely on panel displays, making the global automotive panel market outlook optimistic.
According to a survey by Yano Economic Research Institute, the global market for automotive displays reached 94.64 million units in 2015, growing by 6.9% compared to 2014. Due to the stable growth of the automotive market, over 120 million units were sold in 2015, mainly with CID installations, supporting stable growth in automotive panels.
In terms of the types of installed panels, TFT-LCD is the main type and is showing positive growth. It is estimated that this trend will continue in 2016, with the global market size growing by 7.7% to reach 100.95 million units, breaking the 100 million unit mark.
The Optoelectronics Industry Development Association stated that from the perspective of application trends, currently, the displays equipped in general cars have 2 panels per vehicle, used for the automotive navigation system and rear-seat entertainment system. In June 2016, with the lifting of the ban on manufacturing cars without rearview mirrors in Japan, the demand for displays used in rearview mirrors in the driver's seat will also begin to emerge.
HUD displays are developing towards larger sizes, centered around the European automotive market, with an increased ratio of high-end models equipped. Displays that provide immediate necessary information in emergencies have become standard equipment in high-end models from European manufacturers.
Another trend is the replacement of the currently mainstream TFT-LCD. It is predicted that around 2018, OLED panels will be equipped in some vehicle models. Currently, LGD has begun planning to equip POLED (Plastic Substrate OLED). However, the regulations for automotive OLED panels are currently unclear, and they cannot be widely used until regulations regarding brightness, afterimages, and lifespan are modified. The advantages of OLED panels include fast response times and low power consumption, making them suitable for automotive interiors, which is key to stimulating future demand expansion.
The Optoelectronics Industry Development Association emphasized that in predicting the future automotive display market, CID and RSE will continue to drive market demand. Additionally, after 2017, the trend of HUDs moving towards larger sizes and the installation of electronic rearview mirror displays in cars without rearview mirrors will drive growth. The average annual growth rate from 2015 to 2022 is expected to be around 9%, leading to a projected global automotive display market size of 173.26 million units by 2022.
